Renewable energy

Skellefteå's leading position in power production from renewable energy sources dates back to the early 20th century. Then the establishment of hydropower became the starting point for the development of technology and production methods which over the years have also come to include areas such as wind power and bioenergy.

Purposeful investments and close collaboration with cutting-edge research at the region's university means that Skellefteå continues to be synonymous with the renewable energy of the future. In the first stage is the municipally owned Skellefteå Kraft, which purposefully continues to drive industry development in Sweden.

Skellefteå Kraft is one of Sweden's largest power producers with a prominent position in the development of environmentally adapted energy production such as wind power, hydropower and bioenergy. The company is a large employer in the area with needs for everything from engineers and technicians to economists and fitters.

The Skellefteå area's successful mining and timber industries and leading development of renewable energy have created a strong growth of companies with specialist knowledge in environmental technology. Today, there is a clean tech cluster with players in everything from bioenergy and recycling of base and precious metals to world-leading development of wind power in cold climates.

Examples of companies in the industry are Envibat, Green Exergy and Meva.

Smart Grid Surveillance system

Smart Grid Surveillance system

Smart sensors, redundant radio communication, AI-based decision support and advanced data analysis makes it possible to detect and position faults in the electricity grid immediately. In 2018, Exeri’s system was put into operation in the electricity grid around Malå, Sweden.

Zero Sun

Zero Sun

Zero Sun™ is one of Sweden’s most exciting energy projects right now. At the southern entry into Swedish Lapland, in Skellefteå, Skellefteå Kraft has built a house made for a specific experimental challenge – to be completely self-supporting with solar energy in a place where the sun does not show its face for months at a time.
