The future in development projects

Site East

At Skellefteå Site East, close to Northvolt's factory, conditions are created to create the most sustainable development project ever. By maximizing the cutting edge know-how of both Skellefteå municipality and  external partners, Skellefteå Site East is a source of inspiration for the industry. Both in terms of the courage to dare to think and act in new ways around sustainability, and in working together with contractors towards a common vision.

The industrial land of Skellefteå Site East, covers 45 hectares and is located just a few kilometers outside Skellefteå's city. Already in the initial phase of the project design, Skellefteå Municipality set high sustainability goals and challenged contractors to think in new ways when handing in their tender. The result has surpassed expectations by far.

Together with Skanska, the contractor that runs the project on behalf of Skellefteå Municipality, the development project has been able to save more than 4000 ton CO2 after 75% of the project has been completed, compared to if the project had been carried out in a traditional way.

The partners' shared sustainability objective is a key success factor for the project. Together they have found new solutions that affect sustainability both from an economical perspective as well as an ecological perspective. The way of thinking is circular and the aim is to reuse what the area has to offer. The construction work is carried out with smart and sustainable mass management, enabling the contractor to maintain a good economy while caring for the climate. For example, tree stumps are seen as a resource instead of a waste, removed vegetation is reused as building material, sand and gravel are sorted and reused as backfill material. Moraine is used as filling material, and rock that is excavated is crushed and reused.

Another factor is that all workplace vehicles are powered by electricity or HVO. For example a new electrified stone crusher machine was designed to be powered by 100% green electricity from Skellefteå Kraft, reducing the emission of greenhouse gas by 440 ton.

Skanska is committed to ensuring that every detail of the project is optimized from a climate perspective. This includes the usage of green asphalt with a net zero emissions to pave the roads at Site East. In the end the goal is a completely climate neutral project.
